Studying is not only for school leavers – but also for anyone in the
world that wants to, or needs to know more. There comes a time when you
need to look at what you are doing to advance and update your knowledge.
It may be because you want to push ahead with your career or to open up
new vistas.

It is very easy to get tunnel vision and think that you know
everything in a field or knowledge area. Every day new things are
discovered and become part of the fabric of academic progress. This
requires everyone to update themselves about new ideas and concepts,
while looking at how this can be applied in the workplace.

To study is to give yourself some time, space and motivation to embed
your knowledge and widen your horizons.

While the idea of lifelong learning is not new, it is still important
to get to a point where you consolidate that learning and put the
qualification in place to support what has happened.

Studying is a great way to do this.

Why study? Your existing ideas will get challenged and even if you
have been in a discipline for many years, you will explore some new
ideas that may challenge the conventional wisdom. Learning from others
is also a key component of the study experience. Being more open minded
and having an approach allows you to get a seat around the table and
through learning more about teamwork and people dynamics you are more
capable to handle more complex situations.

You will learn to look at new things and also to challenge yourself
to achieve more with the same time and resources that you currently have
while opening up career opportunities and growth areas in your life.
Some of the ideas that you will learn will confirm what you already
knew, but there will be many ideas that you have never been exposed to
and that end up being the seed of a whole new area of development in
your life.

Another key objective of education is to teach you to learn by
reflection and for the knowledge to become reflexive. That means that
you should be able to apply the basic toolkit that you learnt through
studying to complex scenarios. What may have been a simple idea in class
may become a complex exercise in real life that involves many
stakeholders and that has a significant impact on the business going
forward.

Management is a constantly evolving area of study and while the very
basics have remained the same for thousands of years, there are new and
more sophisticated methods that get developed daily. Scientific research
is advancing the perspectives on what works and does not and sometimes
disprove what has gone before. New and interesting challenges require us
to look at business in different ways.

One of the keys to self-discovery is to know what you do not know and
completing a degree gives you a perspective of what is out there and
what you should be looking at. It also gives you the tools and inner
drive to find out more and gives you the tools to tackle the big and the
small questions.

You may know nothing about a specific knowledge area and through a
HCBM or BBA get to a functional level where marketing allows you to
manage this function in a mid-scale enterprise. Your PDM level will give
you a functional view of how this fits into the larger context of an
organization and an MBA will explore advanced topics in this arena and
put you at the forefront of current knowledge.

Imagine taking the MBA journey and learning about leadership, EQ, SQ,
organisational development, human resources, finance, entrepreneurship,
project management, economics, business ethics, corporate governance,
IT, marketing management, competitive strategy and getting to the
forefront of these fields within 2 years. This then goes into a research
dissertation that allows you to look at practical challenges in the
workplace and contribute through applying a research approach.

Not that brave yet – then the PDM may bring you to a complete
understanding of a business through linking organisational strategy and
planning, financial management, accounting, economics, human resource,
marketing management, corporate governance and business ethics. Through
this thorough understanding of a business context it will serve you well
in linking to the more advanced ideas in the MBA.

The BBA will work systematically through the primary knowledge areas
in business and strategic management, human resource management, project
and operations management, financial management, marketing management
and ICT and bring you to a level in which you understand and can apply
these knowledge areas in your business and management career.
